Abstract

Tropical forests comprise approximately one third of the world’s woodlands and contain 80% of the total land vegetation. The original extent of these forests is estimated at 1.6 × 107 km2. Approximately one third of this is located in Latin America where 40% of the primary forest has been lost to human activities (20). For instance, in Guatemala the pine forests are being diminished by 2.5% each year (11).
