Abstract
Despite some effort, the detailed mechanism of most of the reactions described in this book is still poorly understood. The main reason for this lack of knowledge is the fact that almost all of the catalytic processes, and all of the ones potentially interesting from an industrial point of view, are conducted under high temperature and pressure conditions, so that examination of the catalytic solutions during the reactions is very difficult. Only in recent years has high-pressure IR spectroscopy been applied to this field, but most of the information available still rely on studies conducted under far milder conditions and/or on the isolation of the metal complexes present at the end of the reactions. Although such studies may provide a lot of useful information, their relevance to the actual catalytic process is not generally obvious. Unless some evidence is provided that the low- and high-pressure processes are related, which is rarely the case, the conclusions obtained in these studies should be looked at with caution. As we will see later, this problem is particularly relevant in the cases in which cluster precursors such as Ru3(CO)12 are used.
