Molecular Chemistry of Alkane Activation

Formation and Reactions of CHx species on Metal Surfaces

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASHT,volume 44))

Abstract

The results obtained on the formation, stability and reactions of CXHy hydrocarbon fragments (CH2, CH3, C2H5 and C3H7) on metal single crystal surfaces, particularly on Rh and Pd, are summarized and discussed. CXHy species are produced by thermal and photo-induced dissociation of corresponding iodo compounds. Methods used include X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. Studies performed on supported metals on the chemistry of CXHy fragments and on the reaction of adsorbed CH3 and gaseous CO2 are also reported.
