Categorization of Types and Application of Lexical Rules

The term Lexical Rule (LR) can refer to a wide range of real and virtual mechanisms in theoretical and computational systems. This paper discusses three choices regarding the use of LRs that a system developer needs to make when starting a system-building effort for a practical NLP system. The possible choices for three parameters are described, as are the interactions and trade-offs of the various choices. The first parameter addresses the scope of linguistic phenomena covered by the lexical rule mechanism, potentially including derivational word formation, inflectional morphology, regular polysemy, among others. The second parameter addresses the application of LRs in a computational system, whether at lexicon acquisition time, lexicon load time, or at run time. The third parameter addresses the triggering and constraining mechanisms of LR applicability, needed to avoid overgeneration. We identify the approaches to LRs in some of the other papers in this volume and in other recent publications, according to this categorization.
