Part of the book series: Current Topics in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science ((CTVM,volume 21))

Summary

Some important topics of the present time in the selection of beef bulls for corssing on dairy populations are discussed especially in relation to French conditions. Performance-test procedures now applied in this country for selecting growth efficiency and potential are presented as a basis for discussion of related problems. According to the importance of birth conditions in the beef-dairy crossing practice, the influence of the main variable factors are reviewed. In that case, sire evaluation on birth weight should be preferred to that on frequency of dystocia. Different selection alternatives for limiting dystocia and improving postnatal growth are examined taking into account age of females crossed and genetic merit of beef breeds chosen for terminal crossing. Finally, the number and types cf sire lines to be selected are discussed considering the diversity of selection goals, breeds used or specialised strains developed for that purpose as well as present genetic and economic constraints against too high a degree of specialisation. In the crisis context now affecting selection units and beef dairy crossing in France, a national, even perhaps European plan is necessary to keep an efficient selection of terminal sire lines.
