Abstract

The Altun Tagh fault, a well-known sinistral strike-slip fault on the Asian continent, originates near Lazhulong in the west and extends east-northeast to the eastern part of the Jinta Basin, although it is buried over part of that distance (Fig. 1). Its total length is about 1600 km. Only a few scientists have taken part in field investigations of the fault, but many have paid attention to its significance, including Zhang Wenyou (1974), Molnar and Tapponnier (1975) and Molnar and Deng Qidong (1984). The State Seismological Bureau of China organized a project to study the active Altun Tagh fault between 1985 and 1988. The author participated in four expeditions to study the fault and surrounding areas such as the Tarim and Qaidam Basins and the West Kunlun Mountains.
