Abstract
Deformation along the borders of the Archean Quetico subprovince and adjacent subprovinces of the Superior Province was not uniformly developed in space or time and involved localized shear on a wide range of scales. Fabrics and structures that indicate this inhomogeneity and the sense of shear include foliation of variable intensity and orientation, S-C structures, shear bands, foliation ‘fish’, and asymmetric folds. The earliest deformation occurred prior to lithification in the upper parts of the stratal sequence, and involved localized bedding-parallel shear and early nappe development. This deformation was followed by the main ductile strain and fabric-producing event, which involved oblique shortening (dextral transpression) across the region. The ductile deformation was followed by brittle deformation of similar kinematic nature to the earlier ductile phase.
