Abstract

Norman Barrett described the columnar lined esophagus in 19501. In another paper written in 19572 he acknowledged the opinion of Allison and Johnstone3 that the condition represented an acquired disorder, associated with reflux. There is no useful information about its epidemiology before the widespread use of flexible endoscopy in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
