Abstract
This chapter has a number of purposes. One is to introduce or remind the reader about the elements of calculus, statistics, and chemical kinetics. Another is to analyze growth of cells and population of cells both for the simplest possible case and for more realistic cases. Another purpose is to itemize ways to extract information about the cell cycle from the analysis of the steady state distribution of the sizes of cells in growing populations. Incidentally and insidiously a large number of facts from microbial physiology will be presented.
