Abstract

The decline of CD4+ T-cell number in the peripheral circulation has been considered an indicative barometer of HIV-1 disease progression. A variety of possible mechanisms for the loss of CD4+ T cells have been proposed, yet the main mechanism for immuno-pathogenesis remained unknown.
