Part of the book series: International Library of Ethics, Law, and the New Medicine ((LIME,volume 10))

Abstract

Cultural diversity will be an important issue in the twenty-first Century, not only concerning ethnicity, but also other cultural categories such as aging and geographical locality. Old age and rural identity is a combination of such categories that imply certain traditions, norms, lifestyles, and ways of speaking. First old, rural people are hit by common human devaluation because they do not belong to the dominant majority; the group of younger, urban people. Second, some of these helpful urbanites; namely professionals within health, social security, politics, and gerontology want to implement new systems in order to make better lives for the old, rural people — as seen from a young, urban perspective.
