Abstract
In this contribution defensive measures against dependent failures, applied in the ABB ATOM four-divisional design, are described. The main focus is on separation and diversity. Basic design principles are explained and a review is given of the inherent protection against abnormal events, i.e. fire, seismic hazards, aircraft crash, missiles and flooding. The inherent resistibility against the impact of dependent failures is illustrated by findings from a recently finalized Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) of a four-divisional plant and by examination of some Common Cause Failure (CCF) events involving diesel generators at U.S. nuclear power plants.
