The Treatment of Mixing Processes in Advective Models

  • Chapter
Advanced Physical Oceanographic Numerical Modelling

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 186))

Abstract

The technique for including mixing processes in advective models is presented. Included in the discussion are convective and dynamic adjustment schemes, parameterizations of diffusion, and the inclusion of bulk mixed-layer dynamics in ocean circulation models. A two-dimensional version of an ocean model with two different parameterizations of mixing is used to simulate the response of an ocean density front to atmospheric forcing. The model results indicate a strong interdependence between vertical turbulent mixing and advection of heat.
