Abstract

The welfare of an ever-increasing human population throughout the world, depends in part upon man’s competence to manage continental freshwater ecosystems. Nowadays, these freshwater resources include natural water bodies (e.g., rivers, streams, lakes, ponds), and the construction around the earth of a wide range of standing and flowing waters, such as thousands of reservoirs of all sizes and millions of kilometres of irrigation and drainage channel networks. These natural and manmade aquatic ecosystems provide an excellent environment for aquatic plant growth.
