Part of the book series: Water Science and Technology Library ((WSTL,volume 47))

Abstract

Hydrology provides information fundamental to the design of hydraulic works: water resources planning, development and management; irrigation water management; environmental conservation; and so on. Despite the enormous importance of the Brahmaputra River basin to India, its hydrology has not received as much attention in the country as it deserves. The result is that the hydrological information about the basin is crude and primarily empirical. This chapter presents a review of the basin geomorphology, climate and weather, precipitation, discharges and floods, sediment loads, and erosion.
