Abstract

The stoichiometry of noncyclic photophosphorylation is still a question in debate, i.e. whether the P/0 ratio equals 1, 1.3 or 2 (Hall 1984). In previous papers, we have reported that the degree of coupling between the electron transport and photophosphorylation was not always complete in many chloroplast preparations and P/0 ratio might be increased by treatment with a number of chemicals which we called coupling efficiency improvers (Shen 1985). Recently we have found that the preillumination of spinach leaves could also increase the coupling efficiency of chloroplasts isolated from them.
