Abstract

In recent years the importance of foreign competition as a cause of increased competition has been rising substantially (Shepherd, 1982), and it may be high time to give a systematic treatment of industrial organization within an international framework. The study of foreign competition combines the theories of industrial organization and international trade, and in doing so there are two approaches. One focuses on how the theory of international trade has to be changed if one of the industries in the world is monopolized. The other approach considers how the problems in industrial organization have to be changed if international trade is taken into consideration.
