Abstract

One of the most outstanding topologists in the world was Witold Hurewicz. He was born on June 29, 1904 in Łódź, Poland, where he lived until his graduation from high school. Although he obtained his college degrees abroad and conducted research there, he always stayed in touch with his country of origin, often pointing out his Polish heritage, and continued using the Polish language with family and friends. He visited Poland many times and had warm relationships with his Polish colleagues. Hurewicz published several papers in Polish journals (11 in Fundamenta Mathematicae and 2 in Prace Matematyczno-Fizyczne),and wrote a joint paper with another Polish mathematician, Bronislaw Knaster.
