  • Chapter
Handbook of Charcoal Making

Part of the book series: Solar Energy R&D in the European Community ((SRDE,volume 7))

Abstract

Industrial charcoal-making has a comparatively short history dating back about 150 years. The principles may be outlined as follows:

  • Relatively high investment costs;

  • Intensive use of labor-saving equipment and devices;

  • Efficient recovery of liquid and/or gaseous by-products for captive and commercial use;

  • Wide range of raw material usage, including forestry residues as well as agricultural and municipal waste;

  • Such projects necessarily involve prior feasibility studies, qualified plant design and organisation of logistics.
