Abstract
The availability of GPS receivers as add-ons for PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) at reasonable prices, in combination with communications interfaces for PDAs and the availability of high resolution commercial Earth Observation data (e.g. IKONOS, QuickBird, etc. m combination with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) can provide a helpful tool for mountain rescue operations. Such tools will support search and rescue operations, the management of hazardous events such as avalanches or slope-glides, and many other applications in alpine regions in the future.
