Abstract
Currently, environmental activities in the United Kingdom are usually set in the context of sustainable development. Many diverse actions are required to achieve the practical realisation and successful implementation of sustainable development. Amongst the numerous challenges which this presents, fundamental progress is needed to develop and disseminate technological innovations which will reduce the impact of human activities on the natural environment. An appropriate framework for fostering such innovation is, therefore, an essential component of action for sustainability. In order to consider suitable frameworks for innovation in the United Kingdom, it is necessary to examine current UK environmental policy and environment-oriented technology policy and determine whether they are effective in creating relevant conditions to assist technological innovation. Using this basis of policy analysis and actual experience from companies and organisations involved in the innovation process, it is then possible to establish and recommend approaches which can encourage the development and commercial application of environmentally-beneficial technologies for future sustainability.
