Abstract

The study of refined bounds begins with the improvements in the Hasse-Weil bound due to Ihara and Serre. There is considerable literature in this area beginning with Serreā€™s (1985) lectures. The focus in this chapter is on the recent work of Lauter (2000, 2001) with appendices by Serre and Lauter and Howe (2002).
