Public Drinking Water in the United States

Abstract

The provision of safe and reliable drinking water to most of the U.S. population is ranked as one of the 10 major public health achievements of the twentieth century (CDC, 1999). Over 250 million Americans, who are about 90% of the estimated population, currently are served by about 54,000 public water systems. In those systems, over 80 contaminants are regulated and hundreds of water quality parameters are monitored. Total expenditures for public drinking water in the U.S. are about $36 billion per year.
