The Voyage of Entrecasteaux: Part 2 From Brest to Tasmania

  • Chapter
French Botany in the Enlightenment

Abstract

The expedition sailed from Brest on the morning of 29 September 1791. On the next day, Entrecasteaux announced that he had been promoted to the rank of rear admiral, and both Auribeau and Huon to a captaincy. The harbor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was to be the first port of call, and there they dropped anchor on 13 October 1791. While the crews were occupied taking on wine to replace that which had been consumed, and storing an abundance of fresh meat, vegetables, and grapes sent by the French consul, Fonspertuis, the naturalists developed a plan to climb the peak of Tenerife (Pic de Teyde) and to visit other high mountains on the island.
