The Voyage of Entrecasteaux: Part 1 Genesis & Preparations

  • Chapter
French Botany in the Enlightenment

Abstract

La Pérouse had sailed from Botany Bay on 10 March 1788 to be heard from no more. The first public expression of concern was made in a paper read to the Académie des sciences by Alexandre de Laborde in 1790. Early in 1791, a petition was prepared by the members of the Société d’Histoire Naturelle for the rescue of La Pérouse for presentation to the National Assembly. André Thouin, who was treasurer of the Société d’Histoire Naturelle, and who had taken a personal part in the preparation of the La Pérouse expedition, was the principal instigator of the petition. He was also pushing for a continuation of geographic and scientific research.123
