Abstract

Poikilothermic organisms such as yeast, bacteria, plants and fish, respond to a decrease in temperature with the expression of a specific subset of proteins. Recently, two-component signal transducers consisting of histidine kinases and response regulators, as components of the pathway for perception and transduction of low-temperature signals, were identified in cyanobacteria (Suzuki et al., 2000) and bacilli (Aguilar et al., 2001). However, in eukaryotes, low-temperature signal sensors as well as low-temperature signal transducers have not yet been identified.
