Abstract

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) with more than 18 carbons in length are essential constituents functioning in membrane fluidity, signal transduction, and eicosanoid production. The biosynthesis of PUFAs requires an alternating series of desaturation and elongation reactions.
