Abstract
In this paper the main noise sources on heavy truck vehicles are discussed. Methods of identifying these sources and their dependence on engine and vehicle speed are described. Some analytical studies and experimental results for the sound transmission into an idealized cab enclosure from a homogeneous sound field are presented. Statistical energy analysis (SEA) is utilized to obtain the time- and space-averaged information needed in the design stage. The sound transmission into an enclosure including the effects of apertures is analyzed using a theory for the diffraction of sound, which gives improved results in the mid-frequency range. The effects of system parameters on the frequency-averaged attenuation are considered. The constrained optimization method is used for this purpose. In addition, some design guidelines are given for minimizing the sound power transmitted into the cab enclosure.
