Abstract

One may consider that the top or the limit of the atmosphere is at the height at which the density of the atmosphere becomes zero. It was shown in Chapter 2 that an atmosphere in adiabatic equilibrium has a limit. However, the outer atmosphere, being somewhat in isothermal equilibrium, extends to infinity. In fact, there is no place in the universe which is devoid of atoms and molecules, i.e., there is no altitude at which the density becomes zero.
