PEX Genes in Plants and Other Organisms

Abstract

Peroxisomes were the last of the major cell organelles to be discovered. They are small (approximately 0.1–1.5μM in diameter) structures surrounded by a single membrane embedded with numerous integral and peripheral membrane proteins. Together, the proteins and lipids provide a selective barrier (Chapter 8), thus allowing compartmentalization of the anabolic and catabolic reactions taking place within the organelle. Such reactions include lipid mobilization (Chapters 2 and 3), nitrogen metabolism (Chapter 6) and photorespiration (Chapter 5).
