Microbiological and biochemical background of production and consumption of NO and N2O in soil

Trace Gas Exchange in Forest Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Tree Physiology ((TREE,volume 3))

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) play a central role in the chemistry of the troposphere and stratosphere, respectively, and affect the habitability of Earth (Crutzen 1979; Logan 1983). Recent evaluations indicate that soils are a major source for NO and N2O, with a source strength of ca. 20 Tg NO-N yr−1 (Davidson and Kingerlee 1997; Skiba et al. 1997) and ca. 7 Tg N2O-N yr−1 (Bouwman et al. 1995; Cole et al. 1997), thus contributing as much as 20% and 70% to the total budget of atmospheric NO and N2O, respectively (Conrad 1996b).
