Abstract

Reconstruction of ancient climates (palaeoclimates) is a major goal in areas of the Earth sciences seeking insight into the history of the Earth. On the one hand a petroleum organic geochemist is able to use such information to provide valuable insight on palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental conditions likely to generate rocks offering good sources of petroleum, thereby leading to more effective exploration strategies. On the other hand, an environmental geoscientist might apply palaeoclimate information to predict the likelihood of possible future ice-house and greenhouse conditions.
