Abstract

PVC was first produced on a large scale in the 1930s in Germany and production in the USA and the UK began soon thereafter (Matthews 1996). Worldwide production grew from about 6 million tonnes in 1970 to 17.5 million tonnes in 1989 (Johnson 1990) and 27.7 million tonnes in 1997 (Chemical Week 1998). Production then decreased to 24.9 million tonnes in 1999 (Chemical Week 1999).
