Abstract

The most infamous of the chlorinated pesticides are insecticidal in function and fall into five categories: DDT and analogues; hexachlorocyclohexanes (lindane and its isomers); cyclodienes and related compounds (e.g. chlordane, heptachlor, aldrin, endrin, dieldrin, endosulfan and isobenzan); toxaphene and related compounds; and mirex and chlordecone (also known as kepone). Examples drawn from each category are discussed below, together with the chlorophenoxy herbicides. Some organophosphate pesticides (e.g. dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos), pyrethroid insecticides (e.g. permethrin) and triazine herbicides (e.g. atrazine, triasulfuron) are also lightly chlorinated (RSC 1991) but are outside the scope of this work.
