Abstract
Industrialisation and socio-economic changes came about relatively late in Venezuela: the 1930’s are regarded as a turning point. The population grew from less than 4 million to more than 19 million inhabitants in 1990, and is estimated in 25 million at the end of the millennium: it is still growing at a 2.5% rate, due to a sharp decline in death rates (27.1%o in 1935; 4.6%0 in the 1990’s) and a still high birth rate of 24.5%0 in the 1990’s. The structure of the population is typical of a developing society: 45.8% below 18 years of age and 10.8% above 50 years of age, although trends indicate a decrease in the population under 18 and a great rise in the adult population. On the other hand, urbanisation has been so intense that the rural population decreased from 75% in the 30’s to 14% at the end of the 20th Century (Páez Celis, 1995).
