Abstract
The traditional Hindu texts are silent concerning this question; they concentrate on the moral development of the individual. Mahatma Gandhi, however, attempted an explanation by referring to the combination of many karmas (by the sins of society), which can lead to a crisis, a physical evil such as a natural catastrophe.
