Abstract

I briefly revise the properties of the extended ionised nebulae around symbiotic stars. These are key objects in the discussion of the effects produced by a detached stellar companion on the AGB mass loss, of the outflows from accreting post-AGB stars, and of the mutual interaction of the slow and fast winds produced in these binary systems.

The phenomenology is illustrated by new results on three of the best known symbiotics: He 2–104 (the Southern Crab), RX Pup and CH Cyg.
