Abstract

Chapter 11 is set in a meeting of the Four Corners Virology Task Force. This fictitious government body has been assembled to determine appropriate treatment protocols to govern outbreak of the newly discovered Hanta II virus. This case study asks participants to consider societal verses individual interests as they converge in the face of a threat to the public health. Issues such as the scope of informed consent, research interests verses autonomy concerns, community verses individual rights, and treatment of vulnerable populations are raised. Issues are presented that require analysis with reference to the bioethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and, particularly, social justice.
