Abstract
Indian crested porcupines (Hystrix indica) (Fig. 2.1) are found from Israel to India, including the deserts of the Middle East. They occur in great numbers in the Negev Desert. These porcupines are nocturnal and vegetarian. The adult is about 30 cm high and 70 cm long and weighs between 12 and 18 kg. The spines on its back are 30 cm long. They live in caves that they dig in mountain areas. Their life span is 12 to 20 years and the female produces two to three offspring twice a year (Dor, 1975).
