Abstract
Quantum chaos studies quantum ballistic structures such as squares, circles and stadia, e.g. see Ji and Berggren (1995) where they examine the energy spectrum of a stadium shaped quantum dot with and without a magnetic field. As closed structures, the theoretical results appear to agree fairly accurately with the measured data, e.g. the statistical properties of the spectra. Building on work on disordered systems, semiclassical theories were being developed which provided explicit predictions regarding open quantum structures. However, as we discuss below, these predictions are not agreeing with measured data at least for instances of low number of modes entering the quantum dot. The work of Ferry, Bird and coworkers and Berggren’s group in this area will be reviewed below.
