Heritage Tourism and Urban Environments: Conflict or Harmony?

  • Chapter
Tourism and the Environment

Part of the book series: Environment & Assessment ((ENAS,volume 6))

Abstract

Most studies of the impact of human activities upon the environment concentrate upon rural areas and define environmental quality and the threats to it in terms of aspects of the natural physical environment. The very terminology of the environmental debate is ‘green’ whether applied to political and ideological movements or ‘books’ of planning policy (Commission of the European Communities, 1990; Government of Canada, 1990; Minister of Housing, Planning and Environment, 1989). The obvious assertion still needs to be made that the city is also an environment in the sense of being more than just a location in abstract space. Also the juxtaposition of natural and built, rural and urban, green and grey as two separate systems with dichotomous problems and planning solutions is not only unrealistic but also unhelpful, not least in considering the relations of the activity tourism with its environmental setting.
