Abstract
Natural grassland is usually by far the most abundant and cheapest form of feed for livestock. Where the rainfall is often inadequate and too erratic for widespread dryland (rainfed) crop production, and irrigation water is lacking or scarce, livestock farming based on the natural vegetation is often the mainstay of the economy.
Natural vegetation evolves by the process of plant succesion.
