Abstract

The paper attempts to trace a brief history of spinal Orthopaedics, from its ancient origins to modern times, highlighting the discoveries made between the 16th and the 19th centuries. In the present century, despite the emergence of spinal surgery and the divulgation of primary notions of the elastic behaviour of the rachis, biomechanical engineering has been unable to foster knowledge which would.prevent many orthopaedics from committing errors caused by neglecting fundamental aspects of Biomechanics.
