Abstract
It is well known that the efficiency of conventional ponding systems for treatment of industrial waste-waters can be greatly improved by the use of aquatic plants such as Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia etc. (Wolverton & McDonald, 1975, 1979; Chapkhekar & Mhatre, 1981; John, 1983). Because of this remarkable ability to withstand and absorb toxic pollutants from polluted waters, Eichhornia (commonly known as water hyacinth) has been extensively investigated by a large number of workers all over the world including Sri Lanka (Wolverton & Mckown, 1976; Wolverton et al., 1976; Ong et al., 1987).
