Abstract

“Designing a structure” is normally interpreted as “designing a stable structure,” which must be stable both at all stages of construction and in use. It is very rare to discuss the problem of instability of structures outside the field of structural stability, but in the general context of engineering design. I do believe that a more general approach would lead us to more advanced development and creation of new structures. I’m using the word “Mobility” instead of “Instability” to denote a case where unstable behavior plays a positive role in the realization of a particular structural morphology, at any stage of its construction and use.
