Labour Force Participation of Mothers

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: European Studies of Population ((ESPO,volume 8))

Abstract

Since the Second World War the labour force participation of women has increased across Western Europe. More recently, this development has been accompanied by the substitution of full-time jobs by part-time jobs. Characteristic of both trends is that women with children, who seldom used to go out to work, now are increasingly likely to have a paid job. In spite of this, the institutional diversity of the various member states of the European Union causes essential differences in the pattern of paid labour by women.
