Abstract

New learning technologies provide for interactive and multimedia tools that facilitate teaching and help students acquire self-study skills. Although these technologies can be powerful educational tools, their introduction in academic teaching and learning is slow and fraught with problems. Lectures or seminar presentations remain the preferred teaching methods. Lecturer-independent materials — scarce as they are — rely rather heavily on printed textbooks. New learning technologies as such are insignificant without effective and efficient learning materials. In our contribution we want to elaborate on some personal experiences while developing courseware for adults in regular higher education. Our main research question is to determine to what extent and in what respect an electronic version of a text-book can realize a didactic added value for learners as well as for lecturers. What works, what doesn’t and what need to be changed?
