Abstract
It is an impossible task to describe the relation between EU policies and activities and the sustainable development of cities and regions in one book, let alone one single chapter. Almost every area of general EU policy is relevant for cities and their surrounding hinterlands. In addition, there is a wide variety of specific EU policies and measures that are relevant if the city and/or region meets certain conditions, e.g. that it is located in a given geographical area of the EU or is faced with certain problems. And, finally, the EU offers a wealth of information, funds and other opportunities for cities and regions and/or their private, public and non-governmental sectors wishing to develop innovative and viable initiatives of a variety of types.
