Use of Lineage Exclusion in a Multi-Objective Rice Breeding Program

Abstract

Rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia grisea is the single most important disease constraint to rice production in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (FLAR), created in 1995, determined that breeding for blast disease resistance coupled with grain quality and high yield potential should be a priority for the entire region. Region specific objectives include iron toxicity and cold tolerance primarily for the Southern Cone of Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay; and Hoja Blanca virus and its insect vector Tagosodes orizicolus tolerance for the Tropical Zone of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and the Caribbean. The goal of the breeding program of FLAR is to efficiently combine these characteristics into cultivars acceptable to producers, millers and consumers.
