Abstract
After a short history of the development of electrical machines, a traditional classifiication of these is given. The impact of recent advances in semiconductor power electronics, microelectronics, applied electromagnetics and mechatronics has led to a new approach to classifiication and electrical machine characteristics and structural properties, which is then presented. An approach to the creation of a large variety of motors, particularly small and special ones with specific structures and characteristics is indicated.
